Somehow, the yarn Sairy send me in her wonderful swap package, wants to be scarved up. I have not decided on what to do with the Noro yarn, but here's my first go at the Paton's.
The yarn is very nice to work with, though I guess it is not too good to use on projects were you are likely to frog a lot in-between. I very much like the colouring effects. Which tempts me a little to use the yarn for softies, because those self-colouring things turn out quite nice, mostly, but then, scarves are so nice to crochet, either. :)
I think it might be a little scratchy for a matching cap and too thick for mittens...
I got it! I got it! I got it!
When I came home yesterday, two swap packages were waiting for me. One was just a small keychain swap (a Halloween pumpkin for me) and the other was - tadaaa - Sairy's wonderful yarn! :-)
There was a cake of Manos de Uruguay, four skeins of Paton's SWS, one skein Noro, and a grandiouse tape measure. I thought about taking pictures the next morning, when the light would be better. And I thought about dinner. But then I found myself, with hook in hand, crocheting away on the Manos de Uruguay. It was not enough for a full scarf, but I had this nice black yarn that was waiting for a good scarf pattern - four hours later I had watched three news shows, a couple of documentaries and the end of "Familienfest und andere Katastrophen" on tv - and the Manos was finished. I have to round the scarf off with a lining of black, but at least I could go to bed - no dinner and waaay later than I normally do. I strongly do suspect the yarn just jinxed me. I did not even think about alternative patterns before I started...
P.S.: I'm a designer on ravelry, now! :-)
update: A photo is two posts up.
I had to switch trains yesterday and my ticket worked for a couple of hours more than I needed, so on a whim I got off the train and searched for the next yarn store. It was wonderful! They had Lana Grossa, Schachenmayr, Austermann, Rowan, Debbie Bliss, Noro, ggh, Lang - and probably even more brands I've forgotten. It was not a really big shop, but sooo much yarns! They even had Silana, my favorite yarn that was discontinued about two years ago - I bought all black they had left. And then some Silkdream from Lang, a skein of Noro's Silk Garden and this and that... I came out with considerably less money and a bag full of yarns. And then, just to make the trip more memorable, I had my first ride on the Schwebebahn. :-)
I went to Karstadt today and they have not a single ball of dark blue Catania yarn! Just three light blues. Argh! Now I have to check at Kaufhof though I resolved not to buy yarn there anymore since they upped to prices so drastically. Grumble, grumble, grumble...
The aim was to bring a package to the post. I managed that. On the way back, I bought some idbits for Julkas summer package, blue yarn in the wrong colour (0202 is the colour number I need. But why does Catania have two dark blues that look almost exacty the same? I so hope that 0202 is still around in the shops this year), a Strickliesel, black acrylic paint, two packs of magnets and a single piece of chocolate-magnet, a present for little B, some office stuff... it is really expensive to go to the post office, sometimes!
Since I'm at it: I'm done with the three seasons of Farscape that are available at reasonable prices, and had another go at finishing Babylon 5. It was probably really the fever that made me stop watching it. Well, still more than one season to go. And I saw "Die große Stille" --- totally different, no science fiction, almost no sound anyway, and just the thing I needed on a Sunday morning.
So, this month I managed to make it strictly "use what you have" and buy no yarn at all. Next month, there will be some presents due, so I cannot continue. I don't have three balls of dark blue cotton of the same brand. But, I will go on and try to reduce my stash; I'll make a stash diet. That is, for every gram I buy, I have to use up two (preferrably in advance). 150g of dark blue cotton means using up at least 300g of yarn.
And I plan to attack the last of my three big cones I bought this year (yes, there was one from last year, too). I'm going to make a skirt with an A-form. Since I'll make up my own pattern, I really hope it ends up to be something wearable...
